Law Enforcement and Corrections (LE&C) officers in Alaska and other cold, remote, areas of the United States face unique challenges to crime prevention, investigation and rehabilitation efforts. The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center, Northwest, was established to provide assistance in defining LE&C’s requirements for information and operational technology, with specific attention toward technologies that support law enforcement and corrections under the extreme weather conditions and vast distances found in remote, rural, Alaska, and other parts of the United States. Newly developed technologies will be applicable for Law Enforcement and Corrections officers in all regions of the country with rural or severe weather challenges.

As a program of the National Institute of Justice, NLECTC-Northwest identifies, evaluates, demonstrates and assesses technology applications for State and local law enforcement and corrections agencies. They also manage joint technology programs applicable to law enforcement and corrections missions.

Founded in 2001, and co-located with the Joint Information Technology Center - Alaska (JITC-AK), NLECTC-NW is operated by Chenega Federal Systems, LLC, a technology support company experienced in providing Information Technology support to America’s military; federal, state, and local, government agencies; and private corporations.

NLECTC-Northwest primarily supports LE&C agencies through the following project areas:

  • Equipment performance evaluation in adverse conditions.
  • Capacity building for isolated rural agencies.
  • Performance evaluation of safety and survival equipment.
  • Communication systems to reduce travel and transport requirements.
  • Distance learning and training.
  • Data and Internet connectivity for rural agencies.
  • Expansion and improved operation of emergency communications centers.
  • Evaluation of emergency communications needs
  • Acquisition and application of information technology.
