Mission

The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) Communications Technologies Center of Excellence (COE) mission is to support the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice's research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) process. The COE performs this mission of providing scientific and technology support to NIJ's research and development efforts by;

• Supporting the demonstration, transfer, and adoption of appropriate technology into practice by law enforcement and corrections agencies, courts, and public crime laboratories.
• Assisting in the development and dissemination of technology guidelines and standards.
• Providing specialized technology assistance, information, and support to law enforcement and other appropriate criminal justice agencies.

Target Audience

NLECTC-Communications Technologies COE supports over 23,500 State and local law enforcement and corrections agencies throughout the United States and its territories.

Communications Technologies Center of Excellence Goals for 2008

• Establish and manage an advanced law enforcement wireless data pilot involving practitioner agencies.
• Evaluate and provide technology assistance to the ongoing Danville, VA Voice-Over-Internet Protocol (VOIP) pilot program.
• Establish and manage a P-25 pilot involving practitioner agencies.
• Evaluate and provide technology assistance to a non-terrestrial communications pilot for rural law enforcement agencies.
• Establish and manage a law enforcement software-defined radio pilot with the Orangetown NY Police Department.
• Conduct a study to define the nature of the cell phone problem for law enforcement and corrections agencies and potential technology solutions.
• Establish and manage a law enforcement in-building position location pilot with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.
• Host and support the Communications Technologies Technology Working Group (TWG).
• Host and manage the CAPRAD (Computer Assisted Pre-Coordination Resource and Database) System and provide administrative support to the Regional Planning Committees (caprad.nlectc.du.edu/cp/index.jsp).
