We are actively seeking ideas to help us identify technology needs and requirements as part of the National Institute of Justice's Research, Development, Testing, and Evaluation process. The process takes this input from law enforcement and corrections practitioners and uses it to make recommendations on prioritizing NIJ's investments across technology portfolios.

NLECTC-National Testing and Evaluation: Laboratory Application Process

The National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center-National (NLECTC-National) uses independent commercial testing laboratories, qualified by a certification process detailed in the following paragraphs, to perform official compliance testing in accordance with NIJ Standards.

NIJ Standard 0101.06 Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor: Program Update Dec. 16, 2008

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has given authorization to the Compliance Testing Program (CTP) to begin accepting applications for participation in the newly revised CTP to be conducted in support of NIJ Standard-0101.06 Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor. Application packages for National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP)-accredited laboratories seeking to participate in the CTP may be downloaded below. The application packages include instructions and forms that must be completed and returned via e-mail to bactp@nlectc.org. NLECTC-National, as administrators of the CTP, will review completed applications immediately on receipt.

Ballistic testing laboratories receiving NIJ approval to perform testing for the CTP will be posted on www.justnet.org and laboratories identified on the NIJ-approved laboratory list will be eligible to begin compliance testing immediately.

For all questions regarding the CTP or for assistance with any of the required documentation, please contact NLECTC-National at (800) 248-2742 or e-mail bactp@nlectc.org.

Once a laboratory has been found fully capable of testing armor in accordance with the current NIJ standard, NLECTC will issue notification to the laboratory that it has been granted NIJ-approved status. The detailed conditions of NIJ-approved status are available from NLECTC. Approved status is at the discretion of NIJ and is subject to periodic renewal.

Request a Questionnaire

To request a laboratory questionnaire for a compliance testing program other than Ballistic Resistant Body Armor testing, please contact us toll-free (continental U.S. only) at (800) 248-2742 or (301) 519-5060 (outside of the continental U.S.). Fax inquiries may be sent to (301) 519-5149,or contact us by e-mail at asknlectc@nlectc.org.

Points of Contact
