We are actively seeking ideas to help us identify technology needs and requirements as part of the National Institute of Justice's Research, Development, Testing, and Evaluation process. The process takes this input from law enforcement and corrections practitioners and uses it to make recommendations on prioritizing NIJ's investments across technology portfolios.

NIJ logoThe Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is a research and development agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. NLECTC is a program of NIJ's Office of Science and Technology.

Crash Scene Technologies Course

Since 2003, NLECTC has offered a technology assistance program titled "Crash Scene Technologies," which is available to law enforcement agencies at no cost. As part of this program, NLECTC offers a weeklong course designed for experienced crash scene investigators dealing with major accidents.  Presently, the NLECTC center has no courses available; this page will be updated once additional courses are being offered.

The course covers three basic areas:

  • Mapping technology, including tools that capture data on the scene, and computer-aided drafting or mapping software that diagrams the scene.

  • Black box technology, including a field trip to a salvage yard to extract data from a black box onboard a wrecked vehicle.

  • Reconstruction management and calculation software that performs the calculations and analysis of field data.
